Australia Post release Chinese New Year stamps

AUSTRALIA Post has released a new collection to celebrate the Chinese Year of the Goat on its $2.10 and 70-cent stamps.

The goat is the eighth sign in the Chinese zodiac and symbolises independence.

Australia Post philatelic manager Michael Zsolt said on Wednesday this year's Lunar New Year stamp products had been designed in keeping with Chinese traditional design and customs.

"The products, including a postcard, give everyone an opportunity to send wishes of good fortune and health to family and friends, both here and overseas," Mr Zsolt said.

Hong Kong-born designer Dani Poon had been commissioned to illustrate 12 stamp issues in the Lunar New Year series that represented each of the Chinese zodiac signs, he said.

"The goat is the most feminine sign of all of the Chinese animals.

"Usually they are very good-natured, genuine, timid and bashful.

"The design celebrates the feminine aspect of the goat through the chosen story in the minisheet and the use of pastel colours."

The stamps will be available from Australia Post outlets from Thursday
