Australia signs new immigration agreement with Cambodia

AUSTRALIA and Cambodia have signed a new immigration agreement to strengthen co-operation on irregular migration, people smuggling and trafficking.

Minister for Immigration and Border Protection Peter Dutton and Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior His Excellency Sar Kheng signed the new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at Parliament House today.

Mr Dutton said the agreement will guide their cooperation over immigration issues including technical assistance, exchange of experts and bilateral projects.

"It also provides for regular consultation and information sharing on transnational criminal issues that affect the two countries," Mr Dutton said.

The new MoU follows on from last year's MoU on the settlement of refugees in Cambodia, with their joint ultimate objective to promote the legal movement of people across their borders.

"The agreement represents the renewed determination by Australia and Cambodia to work closely to counter the growing security threat posed by transnational crime and illegal migration practices," Mr Dutton said.

Visiting Australia, His Excellency Sar Kheng highlighted Cambodia's commitment to working on people smuggling issues with Australia and other concerned countries.

"This MoU will enhance the effectiveness of the Australia-Cambodia Immigration Forum, through which both our Governments engage in bilateral projects and activities, including technical projects to develop our capacity to fight this growing international criminal activity," His Excellency Sar Kheng said.

He said Cambodia is committed to sharing information and expertise on the topic with Australia.
