Author makes reading fun for kids

STUDENTS at Terranora Public School were treated to an inspiring show by Australian children's author and surf journalist D.C. Green ahead of the Children's Book Council book week.

D.C. Green has written four children's books and performed almost 600 shows at schools around Australia, sharing his thoughts on writing to help inspire kids.

Library teacher Janice Edwards said Mr Green lived up to the rave reviews she had heard.

“He comes very highly recommended from other schools and he really was very entertaining and the children loved it,” she said.

“He taught the children how to write more creatively and his enthusiasm for writing was really very contagious for the kids.

“They were really curious to find out where he got his ideas from and how he starts his stories.

“As the library teacher, I was looking for something a bit different and a bit fun, and he was really good.”

Ms Edwards said students were delighted when Mr Green began rapping.

“He wanted to show them that even rap artists needed to write lyrics, and they really enjoyed it,” Ms Edwards said.

Mr Green is the author of Three Little Surfer Pigs, Erasmus James and the Galactic Zapp Machine, Erasmus James – King of Kid's Paradise and Stinky Squad.

The school has now added all four books to its library.

The show promises to provide students with an enthusiasm for literature and increased enjoyment of reading, as well as providing reluctant student writers with a number of fun and easy story starting ideas that will increase their confidence and desire to begin creative writing.

As well, Mr Green provides boys with a positive male role model in the literature industry.

The award-winning children's author has also written more than 2000 articles for magazines.
