Avocado fuels Istomin Australian Open campaign
TENNIS: Giant-slayer Denis Istomin rocked the Australian Open when producing one of the tournament's greatest ever upsets in defeating six-time champion Novak Djokovic in the second round.
The Uzbek wildcard entry revealed the secret diet he used to fuel his success down under.
"It was a sandwich with avocados and tomatoes. I like avocados,” the world number 117 said after defeating Pablo Carreno Busta in the third round.
Istomin told media that he had eaten the same breakfast every day since beating Djokovic, and credited his success to his coach and mother.
"This is all because of my mum,” said Istomin ahead of his clash with 15th seed Grigor Dimitrov for a place in the quarter-finals.
"Maybe if I win Australian Open, maybe she will. But I'm not sure,” he said when asked if his mum will ever smile.
The 30-year-old's win over Djokovic was just his second against top 10 opposition in 33 attempts, with his first triumph against David Ferrer back in 2012.
