Baby yoga now a thing

BUSY mums rejoice, there’s now a yoga class for those with newborns and young babies.

Esther McVicar of Murwillumbah is hosting the new classes at her Free 2 Be Yoga school.

“One of the biggest aspects is a lot of time with new mums there can be quite a time between when they have their baby to when they find the time for exercise,” she said.

“In providing a class where mums and bubs come together, you’re establishing that family connection, and providing a time for class when they might not have any.”

Proponents say mum and bubs’ yoga benefits include helping mums to ‘safely rebuild and reconnect’ mums to their postnatal body; and to learn the art of healthy breathing.

Ms McVicar’s classes are suitable for all levels and incorporating traditional Hatha yoga principles.

A number of modifications have been made to poses to consider the recovering post birth body and the demands on a mother who is raising a family.

“You wouldn’t do all the yoga poses, you would only do the poses that work around a bubs’ needs,” Ms McVicar said.

“We work a lot into a lot of bridges, lying on your back, down face dog and supportive planks.”

Ms McVicar said classes will include Asana postures, Pranayama breath work and meditation relaxation.

“Most importantly it will provide the time and environment to build a deep connection with yourself and the little souls you are nourishing and growing,” she said.
