Babylon’s new dawn on track
LAST year’s $33,250 Murwillumbah Cup winner, Bernie Of Babylon, showed he’d lost none of his home track expertise, when he stepped out in Tuesday’s feature 1530m Mount Warning open handicap at Murwillumbah.
Leading from go-to-whoa, he scored by nearly a length in an effort reminiscent of last year’s cup win when he took off with a circuit to go and couldn’t be run down.
Jason Taylor was back on board for Bernie Of Babylon’s Tuesday triumph, and the pair have shown they have struck on a winning formula for success. It may come in handy as the Tweed River Jockey prepares for June’s big Murwillumbah Cup carnival.
The six year old gelding is an automatic qualifier as the reigning champ, and a defence of the crown would go down well among local race fans.
Bernie Of Babylon has scored eight career wins and nearly $140,000 in prizemoney. He is trained by Stewart Campbell.
Tuesday’s meeting was also noteworthy for Murwillumbah trainers taking out four of the seven races on the card, with Matt Dunn training a winning treble.
The jockey club’s next meeting is the traditional Anzac Day meeting on 25 April, which always draws big crowds. Local band Fat Albert will be performing live.
