Bananas get better of rugby rivals

MURWILLUMBAH No.8 Rory Arnold went bananas in all spheres of play to steer his side to a comprehensive 21-0 win over Mullumbimby in their Far North Coast Rugby Villages Competition game on Saturday.

Arnold made a ton of ground every time he picked up the ball and made a huge impact in defence with his rugged tackles putting the Mullumbimby ball-carriers in two minds.

Matt Alexander at stand-off also performed strongly for the Bananas, organising the backline and ensuring his runners hit the holes in the defensive line.

Blindside flanker Nick Reeve was another player to the fore and was rewarded with the players' player award.

Reeve had a massive workload, supporting his teammates in attack and tackling everything that moved in defence.

The Bananas crossed for three tries in the opening stanza with Lou Rantino grabbing a double and Rory Arnold the other.

Arnold's try was a beauty – he snatched the ball five metres out and barged his way over with three defenders hanging off him.

Murwillumbah showed great defensive resolve after the half-time break when Mullumbimby threw everything at them.

The Bananas had several chances to add to their total but had to be content with just the one try, with Matt Alexander finding the line.

Rantino also crossed the try line but the play was recalled for a forward pass.

Winger Nick Moran went close to adding to the Murwillumbah tally but a cruel bounce as he was about the ground the ball after he had toed ahead ended his hopes.

The Bananas played well with good structure in attack but let a host of scoring opportunities slip.
