Bands about to battle
THE third Tweed Youth Speaks Battle of the Bands contest is about to wrap up by announcing the winners at the final heat on Friday, April 20.
The event, which was part of Tweed's Youth Week celebrations, gave the opportunity for 12 to 25-year-olds to showcase their musical talents and be in the running for prizes.
Youth development officer Sylvia Roylance said this year's Battle of the Band contestants were exceptional and that an extra contestant will play with the six final contestants.
"Out of five bands each which played at heat 1 and heat 2, seven have been chosen to play at the final this year for the first time ever," Ms Roylance said.
"It was very hard for the judge and there were ties on both the heats. Three bands were chosen at each heat and the extra one was the audience/supporters' choice.
"The event has attracted a great audience over the years and people come from not only the Tweed Shire but also from Brisbane all the way to Byron Bay.
"There is so much young talent out there and this contest is a great way for them to be recognised. The music quality played at this event is phenomenal."
Eilish Ellen, a Gold Coast musician and one of the seven finalists playing in the final heat, said it was her first time at the event and she was very happy with the support shown by the audience.
"I play different genres like jazz, blue, folk, indie and pop. I am also a songwriter and at the Final Heat I will be playing requested songs including one I wrote," Ms Ellen said.
"It is thrilling to play with a huge music system and on the stage for a large audience, I get to show my voice off and meet lots of other musicians."
Mason Rack will be opening the night followed by D.A.W.N, Dressing the Drummer, Hometown Heroes, Danger at the Door, Eilish Ellen, Benny P and Gabriel and Cecilia battling out on the stage.
At the end of the night winners will be awarded $2000 for first, $1000 for second and $500 for third prize.
