Bank relocation causes grief
COMMONWEALTH Bank customers from Burleigh Waters say they are shocked that the Treetops Plaza branch will close its doors for good on June 20.
The branch is relocating to Stockland Burleigh next month.
Several customers said the bank had not informed them about the proposed closure and claim it will have a significant impact on them.
The branch is heavily utilised and also provides two auto teller machines.
Elderly Customer Sam Stewart said he was “extremely disappointed” over the closure.
“I use the bank at least twice a week, and travelling to Stockland Burleigh is a huge inconvenience for me,” he said.
“Stockland Burleigh is a five-minute drive from Treetops, but for elderly people with no vehicle, it is an unreasonable distance to walk.”
Edward Trimble is 85 years old and said he could lose his licence at any time due to the effects of aging.
“I know many elderly people who use the bank and can't drive,” he said.
“The move will make banking very difficult and stressful for them.
“They are not computer savvy, so can't use online banking.
“Life is getting very hard for old people like me and it's very scary.”
Some businesses operating at the centre claim the closure will impact on trade, saying the bank is a “major drawcard”.
“The closure of the Treetops branch will take customers away from the centre,” one business owner said.
The Westpac Bank at Burleigh Waters has been canvassing for customers on the strength of the closure and has sent out letters stating that the closure will “cause some grief and inconvenience".
