FIRE and Rescue NSW is looking for people who are up to the challenge of joining the service at Banora Point.

Banora Point Fire Station is now recruiting retained (on call) firefighters to be on call from home or work to respond to fires and other emergencies.

Banora Point Fire Station station commander Daryl Pearce urged local residents from all walks of life to consider becoming a retained firefighter.

"If you enjoy being part of a team, are physically fit and want to give something back to your community contact us and find out how to become a retained firefighter," he said.

"Retained firefighters receive a monthly payment for being on call and an hourly rate for attending incidents, training sessions and other activities.

"The majority of retained firefighters have other jobs and their employers are happy for them to leave work to attend call outs."

Fire & Rescue NSW and the Rural Fire Service have responsibility for different areas within NSW, although they often assist each other in fighting large fires.

In the Tweed Shire, Fire and Rescue NSW is the primary response service for all structural fires and bushfires.

"The role is a varied, interesting and rewarding one," Mr Pearce said.

"They not only fight fires and respond to a wide range of emergencies, they also educate school children, seniors, business people and the wider community about fire safety."

There are 14 retained firefighters at Banora Point and the service is looking to increase that figure.

Commissioner Greg Mullins said that retained firefighters were a crucial part of providing fire protection to NSW communities.

"Retained firefighters play an important role in ensuring the safety of people, property and bushland across regional and rural NSW," he said.

"They are trained and equipped to deal with the same emergencies as permanent firefighters and are dedicated and passionate about what they do."

A information night will be held at Banora Point Fire Station in Corporation Crt South Tweed Heads, next to Bunnings Hardware on Monday 26th November from 6pm to 7:30pm.

For information about becoming a retained firefighter at Banora Point e-mail your enquires to Daryl.Pearce@fire.nsw.gov.au , visit www.fire.nsw.gov.au or come along to the information night.
