Banora Point Primary School in state's top-four
Banora Point Primary School has gone down to Bateau Bay despite a valiant effort in the Primary School Sports Association (PSSA) Classic Shield state semi-final on Friday.
Banora, coached by the school's rugby league coach Murray Purcell, have been training each Monday after school since March and took a six game undefeated streak into the semi-final.
Despite strong form, Banora were riddled with injury and the loss of four of their top players heading into Friday's match and went down 32-16 in the fast-paced encounter.
With 100 plus supporters watching on at South Tweed Sports Field, Banora Point, Bateau Bay came out firing to pile on four unanswered to establish an early 16-nil lead.
Bateau's speed was the difference between the sides, with multiple tries coming from defence splitting runs, including their fourth, which came from a full length of the field run.
To their credit, Banora Point fought back strongly in the last ten minutes of the first half, converting two tries to take the score to 16-12 at half time.
Bateau regained control of the match in the second half, scoring early tries to put the pressure back on Banora Point.
When Bateau crossed for their third try of the second half to take their score to 32, the contest was effectively over.
Banora Point, however, refused to lay down and crossed the line for the last try of the match.
The semi-final appearance secures Banora Point a top four finish in the PSSA competition, which has only been won by two Tweed Primary Schools in 100 years - Tweed and Kingscliff Primary Schools.
North Coast NRL development officer Michael Donnelly said injury cost Banora Point dearly.
"With some of Banora Point's best players out, they were unable to shut down Bateau Bay's run,” Donnelly said.
"Pre game, I couldn't split the two, but with Banora losing four of their best players, that was the difference.”
Donnelly said the competition was the biggest in the state, with 500 teams taking part.
Three Banora Point players - Jake Lateo, Harry Hall and Hayden Wilson were all named in the state PSSA Rugby League North Coast Representatives for their strong play in the competition.
