A BANORA Point man who was killed while competing in the Brisbane Twilight Running Festival last month will be remembered by many this weekend.

Joe Kelly suffered serve head injuries on March 24, when a freak storm hit during the run.

The storm caused tree branches to fall and a blackout of all street lights.

Mr Kelly was taken to hospital but died five days later.

National Parkrun organiser Tim Oberg said Mr Kelly was a much loved and well respected man within the running community.

"He was originally from Canada and was admired by many," he said.

"It could have happened to anyone that day, but it was so sad to learn it happened to him.

Mr Oberg said Mr Kelly was and healthy, avid athlete in his late 50's.

Brisbane run organisers have since faced some criticism about whether the accident could have been avoided had called the race off in the early stages of the storm.

"In retrospect it shouldn't have happened, but the storm hit so quickly that event organisers were not to know," Mr Oberg said.

The race was called off later in the evening.

This Saturday, Mr Oberg is inviting anyone in the community to come down to Salt at Kingscliff for the five km tribute run.

"It's a simple gesture to honour his life," he said.

All runners are encouraged to wear a black arm band out of respect.
