Dancers raise bar in final week

AN audience silenced with awe greeted the open divisions of Tap Dance Improvisation, Waltz Tap Dance, Jazz Improvisation, Classical Ballet and Modern Dance as they graced the stage of the Murwillumbah Festival of Performing Arts yesterday.

President Arthur Holmes said as the final week of the festival began the bar had also begun to rise.

“The open divisions have displayed a wonderfully high standard,” Mr Holmes said.

“It has all run really well.”

He said the stakes were high as all competitors had their sights set on the final awards concert in August.

“The major winners in all categories will perform in a concert at the Civic Centre in August,” he said.

“When the performances are over they will receive trophies. We're in our final week so they can all see that day coming closer.”

Mr Holmes said the festival would celebrate its 80th anniversary with a concert on August 20 featuring previous performers who have gone on to gain national and international recognition for their craft.

“It is so exciting to think about all of the wonderful talent that has been showcased through this festival over such a long time,” Mr Holmes said.

“This concert is planned to celebrate the 80th anniversary. We hope that many performers, adjudicators and guests will return for this evening.”
