Barry Longland hits back at claims of Labor bias

TWEED mayor Barry Longland has spoken out against claims that a Labor bias in the council led to the sacking of council GM David Keenan.

In a My Daily News report on April 8, Tweed Chamber of Commerce president Rory Curtis accused Cr Longland of saying one thing at election time to gain votes while believing in another.

Cr Phil Youngblutt also criticised Cr Longland, saying "council is now run by a virtual Labor Mayor, a real Labor deputy mayor and two Greens accomplices."

"First of all, I need to state that I am proudly independent and will always put the best interests of the Tweed first, rather than party politics and diversion tactics as we see happening here," Cr Longland responded.

"I am confident the community can see through the politics and like me, will be asking questions about who funded and organised the recent rally and the political games from those involved.

"The community discussion around the termination of the former general manager has been hijacked, clearly to seek political advantage."

Cr Longland said if he chose to, he could "play the political game and point out to the community all of the obvious political contenders involved and their online pseudonyms."

"But this is not relevant to the decision to end the contract of employment for the former general manager.

"Politics aside, I understand that the community wants to know more about why the former general manager's contract was terminated and I look forward to making further comment once the council receives the report from the Division of Local Government following their recent visit to the Tweed."

EDITOR'S NOTE: In a previous version of this story, we attributed Cr Youngblutt's comments about an alleged Labor bias to Rory Curtis. We sincerely apologise for the error and any confusion caused.
