Baseball fans in for treat with LA Dodgers to play in Sydney

GET ready for the Magic show, Aussie baseball fans.

Part-owner of the LA Dodgers, former NBA superstar with the LA Lakers, Magic Johnson, will bring his team to Sydney next March to face the Arizona Diamondbacks in the opening two games of the Major League Baseball season at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

And Baseball New South Wales general manager Tim Harradine said while there were already 50,000 registered players across the country, he believed the games would lead to an explosion of interest in the sport across the country.

"It's such a massive event and it was one that took a number of years to secure - opening day of the season is considered sacred in the US," he said.

"The SCG will provide us with the perfect backdrop, with the new stand to be complete, and the ground will even include specially-made dugouts for the players."

It what is estimated to be a $13 million coup for the New South Wales government, the games will be played on March 22 and March 23 - the first time a competitive US baseball fixture will have been held in Australia.
