Baseball returns to the Tweed
WITH a list of usual sporting suspects gearing up for summer sign-on days on the Tweed, one sport that stands out from the pack is baseball, which is set to make its long awaited return.
While various sports have continued strong connections with the Tweed, baseball disappeared, leaving players to travel north of the border or down to Lismore.
However, things are about to change with Tallebudgera based baseball club the Alleygators set to resurrect the sport with a potential Casuarina based program for boys and girls of all ages.
The club launched a sign on day on Sunday and with more approaching, club president Brian Gibson hoped to entice young players as possible to the sport.
Gibson said the plan was to run a tee ball and under-10's competition in Casuarina, but older kids could also play.
"For us to play in Casuarina, we're looking for a minimum of about 20 tee-ball kids from four to eight,” Gibson said.
"We're also looking for under-10's (rookie ball), but if they're 11 or beginners at 12, they can still play, there's no limitations there.”
After Sunday's sign-on day, the club will now hold two more on August 14 and 21 at Arkinstall Park from 9-11.30am and Casuarina sportsfield from 1-3.30pm.
Gibson said the club had a view of positioning their southern venture at Cobaki to build baseball in Northern NSW.
Gibson was confident of the sport succeeding once again on the Tweed.
"Kids love it and its a fun sport to play,” Gibson said.
