Authorities ban Darling Downs dairy from selling bath milk

A CRACKDOWN on the sale of raw milk has hit home for a Haden dairy farmer who has been ordered to stop sending his bathtub product to market.

Greenhills Bath Milk, which is produced on Patrick Kruger's farm, will no longer be available after Safe Food Queensland told him to stop selling the product.

The unpasteurised, unhomogenised product can not legally be sold for human consumption in Queensland but is also popular for cosmetic use.

It has disappointed Organic Food Market owner Susan Curtain, who took her last delivery of the popular product at her Campbell St store on Friday.

"I have a lot of customers who are unhappy that a very good local source of bath milk is going to be unavailable," Mrs Curtain said.

The milk was sold for $6.95 for two litres.

"Next week I will have to order it in from somewhere else.

"We sell a significant amount of bath milk in comparison to our other milks.

"As far as dairy goes, it is our most requested item."

A spokesman for Food Safe Queensland said labelling raw milk as bath milk was a way of obfuscating the law.

"It has been brought to our attention there is an increase in using this loophole," the spokesman said.

He said milk had to be pasteurised to kill pathogens, some of which were potentially very harmful to humans.

"People do get sick."

He said he did not want farmers to stop producing milk, but insisted it had to be processed according to the law.

"They have to supply through the right channels."

Mr Kruger yesterday confirmed he had been ordered to stop producing bath milk but declined to comment further on the issue.
