Parkway Drive back to where it began with huge gig at YAC

PARKWAY Drive know how to put on a world-class gig.

And the 10th anniversary show by the Byron Bay-bred sensations was no different.

It's been hailed by long-time fans and newcomers alike as one of the band's most memorable performances ever.

Staged in the grounds of the Byron Youth Activity Centre (YAC), where Parkway Drive played their first-ever gig 10 years ago, the show resulted in almost 900 fans witnessing the band in a rare up-close performance.

Opening with the first song they ever played live - I Watched - they went on to play a typically muscular set. "A complete connection between the band and the audi- ence," was how a long-time fan described the vibe.

"To pull off a concert as big as that in such as a small area was a huge achievement," he said. "The energy was unsurpassed.

"These guys started here, and now they're back as one of the biggest metalcore bands in the world.

"Their legacy can't be overstated."

YACROCKCAFE co-ordinator Nicqui Yazdi who ran the first-aid crew said there were no serious injuries from the moshing and crowd-surfing.

"It was just a treat," she said.

"There were people in their 70s there. One of the local swimmers, Dennis, was wandering past yesterday afternoon and he said 'can I come back and have a peek?' He came back and stayed for the rest of the show with a grin from ear to ear, and he's in his 70s.

"Because they're still just Byron Bay dudes; they're so loved. They don't act like rock stars in any way."

And while these days the band is touring at least seven or eight months of the year, they still call Byron home.

Next stop for the five-piece is three sold-out performances in Brisbane - then they're off to Europe.
