Beach fix wiped out
MEMBER for Currumbin Jan Stuckey has blasted Labor for “vote grabbing” over funding to fix Kirra Point.
She said only $1 million of the $1.5 million offered by Labor to return Kirra to its glory days actually went into the quest to bring back the point's famous wave.
“Former minister (for environment and resource management) Kate Jones failed completely,” Ms Stuckey said.
“This $1.5 million promise was nothing more than a vote grab by Labor during the 2009 state election campaign.”
It was revealed in parliament the remainder of the money allocated to the restoration project will be allocated to the longer-term operational enhancements of the Tweed River Entrance Sand Bypassing Project.
Former world champion and local Wayne “Rabbit” Bartholomew said it was unlikely Kirra would ever return to the surf haven it once was.
Mr Bartholomew said reductions by Gold Coast City Council, who was commissioned to implement the restoration project of both of the point's groynes in 1995, meant problems caused by the sand were the underlying issue.
“The sand's improving, but the big issues are with the big and little groynes,” Mr Bartholomew said.
“Little Groyne was basically removed, and 100 foot or 30 metres was taken off Big Groyne, so there's a huge problem with Kirra because it's been interfered with so heavily.”
At time of press response was still being sought from the council and current Environment and Resource Management Minister Vicky Darling.
