Beaches remain closed
GOLD Coast and Tweed beaches remain closed today due to poor weather.
According to the Bureau of Meteorology, the low pressure system 630 nautical miles east of Brisbane is causing large swell and widespread unstable conditions in the southern Gold Coast and the Tweed.
A Gold Coast City Council spokesman said while most city beaches are holding up well, some erosion has occurred at a number of locations.
The popular walkway around Greenmount was also closed with a large swell battering the coastline.
The Queensland Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry had warned that the swell on Tuesday had pushed shark control equipment off the Gold Coast onto the beach.
Fisheries Queensland shark control program manager Jeff Krause said that while effort was made to anchor the gear, strong winds causing high seas could set gear adrift.
"We urge people to stay clear of shark control gear at any time, but it is particularly important for people to stay away from gear that has come adrift.
"Gear that is loose in the water is very dangerous especially if someone becomes entangled.
"If people see shark control gear including ropes, netting or buoys which has come loose, they need to phone the Shark Hotline on 1800 806 891 so that the equipment can be retrieved."
Council crews will reassess beach conditions Thursday morning.
