Beaches shut as big surf rolls in
SURF conditions described as "dangerous" have forced the closure of Gold Coast beaches today.
A low pressure system off the coast is whipping up strong winds, rain squalls and increased swells.
The Bureau of Meteorology has put out a warning for dangerous surf conditions.
Gold Coast City Council has announced its beaches will be shut for the day, with the incoming tide due about noon.
"It is not good beach weather at all, so residents and tourists are advised to stay out of the rough weather," the council said in a statement.
"We are hopeful that conditions will improve as the system passes through and Lifeguards will continue to monitor conditions."
