Bending banana prices

GOLD Coast and Tweed fruit lovers will peal with laughter when they hear the news banana crops will be back in full swing by the end of September.

Australian Banana Growers Council president Cameron Mackay said recent warm weather had seen an increase in crop production levels and prices should be back to normal in the coming weeks.

According to Mr Mackay, banana supplies are increasing week by week as the weather turns warmer.

Kennedy Drive Fruit and Veges Market produce buyer Daniel McIntosh said this was welcome news for fresh fruit lovers.

“We have been stocking all Northern New South Wales bananas so we have not had a problem with stocking them and the prices have not been too dear,” Mr McIntosh said.

“This is great news for everybody, for both shop owners and consumers.

"It means there will be better banana prices available to the public and a great banana crop available.”

Mr McIntosh said bananas were still a strong favourite among Tweed shoppers.

“People are always buying bananas,” he said.

During July, banana supplies dwindled to an all-time low in some parts of Australia and the Australian Banana Growers' Council advised consumers to think twice about growing bananas in backyards with the aim of beating the high prices and low supply.

The council has now welcomed the news of the increased banana crop production following the end of the colder months and the start of spring.
