Bennett to speak for baby Claire

RUGBY League's undisputed super coach Wayne Bennett will be guest speaker at a fundraiser at Saltbar next month for one-year-old Gold Coast girl Claire Matilda who has been diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder.

Cri du Chat syndrome, which affects about 50,000 people, will impact on Claire's intellectual and physical development unless it is treated with early intervention.

Claire is ineligible for government support as her condition is so rare, and by the time the National Disability Insurance Scheme is active in Queensland, the window for early intervention for Claire will have closed.

Claire's mother Hannah Gutke has spoken of the financial strain on the family raising a child with a disability.

"As her parents, we want to give her every opportunity to reach her full potential. Early intervention is vital," Ms Gutke said.

"We want to provide for her needs now and into the future, while still maintaining quality of life as a whole family."

The family was incredibly grateful for Mr Bennett's support, dramatically raising the profile of their Day on the Deck for Claire.

"We are just overwhelmed with the generosity of Wayne, this charity event will change Claire's life," Ms Gutke said.

The last time Wayne Bennett came to Salt Village in Kingscliff, $30,000 was raised for the Salt Surf Life Saving Club.

He is widely recognised in rugby league circles as one of the most influential and innovative modern day coaches, coaching the Brisbane Broncos for 21 years from 1988 until 2008.

In 2009 he was appointed coach of St George Illawarra and in 2010 he took the team to its first NRL victory in 31 years.

He is the longest serving coach of a single club, has one of the best winning percentages and ranks second in the number of premierships won as a coach at an elite level.

Organiser and Saltbar marketing manager Katrina Dudley is hoping people will see just how easy it is to change young Claire's life and take half a day off work in the process.

"Saltbar will be putting on a great afternoon with amazing food and drink on our ocean front deck with fabulous entertainment," Ms Dudley said.

"We hope that people will dig deep and help out gorgeous little Claire and her family.

"We are hoping for 350 people and have already received some fantastic auction prizes.

"We are still looking for local businesses to donate prizes so we can raise even more money."

The entertainment line-up also includes Australian funnyman Steve Allison.

The fundraiser will be held at Saltbar in Salt Village, Kingscliff on Friday, February 4.

Tickets to the event are $125, which includes a buffet lunch and all you can drink package for threee hours.

Discounts for tables of 10 are available.
