Bill's sleepless night as storm struck
BILL Lemon has been travelling to Yamba all his life, and even saw a cyclone come through in 1966, but he's never seen a storm as bad while he's camped out as he did last night.
"Back in '66 we were in a holiday cottage, but this one was a bit scary for a while," he said.
Starting just on dark, and with his 22 foot caravan copping the full force of the weather, he and his wife had no option but to sit inside and wait.
"This is a big van, and it was rocking her pretty good," he said.
"And around 9-ish, when the wind got really heavy, the awning went.
"It just bent it and we could hear a hell of a racket.
"Everything was all pegged down, and it just ripped it right up.
"I slept on and off for 10 minutes at a time when the rain would stop, but then it'd come back again and again."
On waking, Bill said the storm created a huge mess around their site.
"There was bits everywhere, spread all over the place," he said.
"We were pretty lucky, and we didn't lose power thank god, especially given all the timber down around us," he said.
"I've been coming here all my life and lived here, and I can never remember any winter storms as bad as this."
