'A black day for the public service'

QUEENSLAND'S public service union has argued Premier Campbell Newman cares more about votes in his Ashgrove electorate than the whole of regional Queensland.

Together Queensland secretary Alex Scott labelled budget day as a "black day" for the public service, especially for regional Queensland.

He said it was incredible the State Government could cut 14,000 jobs but find $100,000 to build new sports facilities for the Jeeps Rugby Club in Ashgrove.

"This budget will destroy jobs in the mining industry, destroy jobs in the community sector and will destroy jobs in the public sector," he said.

"The government has its priorities wrong. It needs to focus on delivering services it needs to focus on regional Queensland, not just the Ashgrove electorate.

"We're seeing, in capital works statement, there is an excessive focus on the Ashgrove electorate whether it be the Jeeps change rooms or additional school facilities in the Ashgrove electorate.

"What we're not seeing is appropriate levels of resourcing for regional Queensland and clearly the attempts to change the budget focus has meant there'll be a significant reduction in a range of capital works programs across Queensland, particularly regional Queensland."

Treasurer Tim Nicholls told parliament during his budget speech that 75% of the government's expenditure would take place outside of Brisbane, with the $495 million Royalties for Regions program also rolling out.

Opposition deputy leader Tim Mulherin, from Mackay, has argued 70% of the capital works budget was within four hours of Brisbane in the south-east corner.
