Blackout in Tweed as transformer fails

BLACKOUTS have affected parts of Tweed with the power outage causing commotion on the roads and in shopping centres.

Lights at Minjungbal Dr, Tweed Heads were reportedly out and Tweed City Shopping Centre lost power, causing some shoppers to panic at the rare situation.

An Essential Energy spokeswoman confirmed they were experiencing issues.

"We do have some outages at the moment," she said.

A spokeswoman for Tweed City Centre said they were unsure what the problem was, but assumed a transformer had failed.

"We're not sure what it was," she said.

"A transformer went out we think."

Tweed City Marketing Manager Megan Connellan said she believed parts of the grid went out this morning and that traffic lights on Minjungbal Dr were affected.

Some parts of the Tweed are still experiencing outages.
