Blockage causes untreated waste to spill into river

FLUSHABLE wipes appear to be the cause of a pump blockage, which caused untreated waste to spill into the Condamine River on Monday.

Council director of Engineering Services Peter See said the pump well and the two pumps in the area were examined three months ago and found to be satisfactory.

"The two pumps involved in the wastewater overflow on Monday have been inspected," Mr See said.

"Both pumps were blocked, one was partially blocked and the other was completely blocked," he said.

"Both pumps were found to be blocked with the so- called 'flushable wipes' and a surgical stocking was found in one pump."

The council wanted to remind residents that wipes were not biodegradable and did not break down and should not be flushed.

The council must undertake water sampling, and while this is under way, the signage will remain in place and residents are urged not to swim or fish in the area of the Condamine River until the signage is removed

This may not occur until early next week.
