Blow-up car helps drive-home safety pledge
TWEED shoppers will be asked to make a pledge to drive safely this week as part of Australia's largest community-based road safety campaign that features a life-sized blow-up car.
The Fatality Free Friday safety campaign stall will be at Tweed City Shopping Centre outside Coles between 10am and 1pm on Friday.
Shoppers will be asked to make a pledge to stay focused on the road, keep a safe distance and drive to suit the conditions by signing a giant inflatable car.
Council Road Safety Officer Alana Brooks said 130,000 people already had taken the pledge online.
This year's campaign theme is 'the key to road safety is in your hands', Ms Brooks said.
"We can all take simple actions to prevent road trauma by obeying speed limits and driving to suit the prevailing road and weather conditions," she said.
"Speed is still the biggest contributor to crashes on roads in the Tweed."
By making a pledge in writing, it is hoped the road safety message sticks to the driver making the pledge as well as to the inflatable car.
The life-size blow-up car will also be parked at the top of the steps outside the Murwillumbah Tweed Shire Council offices on Thursday for anyone who would like to make their pledge early.
