Blues aiming to continue form lift

COOLANGATTA-Tweed Heads Blues stalwart Daniel “Dougie” Hawkins is “pretty sure” his Australian Football League Queensland Premier team “has turned the corner” and looking definite premiership prospects.

Hawkins, who has played a long-time starring role for the Blues, believes that “pretty sure” will become “certainly” if the Blues carry the excellent teamwork from last week into this afternoon's away clash with Maroochydore.

The entire Blues outfit went together like strawberries and cream and Abbott and Costello in absolutely annihilating Springwood 28.18 (186) to 9.6 (60) in the club's big Queensland Cancer Council fundrasing day at Len Peak Oval.

“It was easily our best performance this season – I left the field a very happy man,” Hawkins said.

“Everything came together on the day – our structure was perfect and as a result we had winners all over the ground.

“I was chuffed by the performances of our younger blokes – they sort of came of age during the game and showed they were not out of their depth playing at this level.”

Hawkins was reluctant to single out any individuals but when prompted, was lavish in his praise of Daniel Cosser and Paul Phillip.

“Daniel's still under 18 (years) but he played like a veteran. His strength under the high ball and at ground level was a sight to behold and he gave all of us a lift when he emerged with the ball,” he said.

“Paul Phillip is another of our Papuan recruits and he was amazing throughout the game – his tackling was second to none and he also ensured we gained more than our fair share of possesion.”

Equally pleasing for Hawkins was a big roll-up of former Blues players who cheered vociferously from the sidelines throughout the duration.

“The boys' presence was a real boost for us and their support contributed to us handing in our most impressive game of the season so far,” he said.

“Just hope they can get along more frequently throughout the season because I can promise them a lot more enjoyment before the season is over.”
