BMW 1 Series to start at $35,600, matching Audi and Mercedes

THEN there were three. BMW has matched Mercedes-Benz and Audi in the pint-size market, dropping its 1 Series base model to a starting price of $35,600.

The pricing revision has also come with an updated specification list, with the baby Beemer now coming standard with an eight-speed automatic transmission (previous an option costing between $2693-$4000 depending on the model).

New 1 Series models will arrive in showrooms from September.

BMW's 1 Series sales are down 12.6% compared to the same time last year. Mercedes-Benz has stolen more than 38% of the small car market with its two-pronged A- and B-Class attack.

Audi's new A3 is yet to hit its straps but sales numbers are on par with last year.

While the BMW 116i, 118i and 118d will now be equipped with an eight-speed box, the higher powered 125i and M135i receive the same self-shifter but with a launch control function.

Further additions to the standard specification for the entry point 116i include an upgrade from cloth to man-made leather upholstery and rear park distance control.

The 118i, 118d and 125i also receive the upgraded leather and the standard gear also includes Navigation System Business which includes a high resolution 16.5cm screen and iDrive controller as well as extended Smartphone connectivity including voice control and Bluetooth audio streaming.

All 125i models will have 18-inch double spoke alloys and the Sport Line pack, which includes sports seats for driver and front passenger, sports leather steering wheel, and exclusive high-gloss black trims for the exterior and interior with red accent lines.

The range topper for the 1 Series hatch, the M135i performance car receives the biggest uplift in specification, and it will now have front and rear paring sensors, along with Navigation System Professional with integrated touch controller function and internet functionality.

BMW has also refined its options packages.

The Convenience Package includes a rain sensing wipers, anti-dazzle interior mirror and extended smartphone connectivity and is only available for the 116i.

The Advanced Parking Package, combines BMW's parking assistant feature with front and rear park distance control sensors and rear view camera.

The Visibility Package includes bi-xenon headlights including headlight washers, high-beam assistance, adaptive headlights (excluding 116i) and anti-dazzle exterior mirrors.

BMW's Premium Sound Package brings together the harman/kardon sound system with digital radio.
Navigation System Professional, internet functionality and an upgraded instrument cluster with extended contents join together with the harman/kardon sound system and DAB radio to make up the content of the Professional Multimedia Package.

For those who want luxury, there is the Comfort Package which includes keyless entry and push button start, electric seats with memory function, electrically adjustable lumbar supports and seat heating for the front seats.

Metallic paint, sunroof, leather upholstery and through-loading system are still individually selectable.
