BMW goes up in flames after fault in the engine bay

A BMW car was engulfed in flames on Sexton Hill this morning, sending clouds of smoke billowing skywards.

Tweed Heads Fire Brigade said they attended the fire near Short St about 9.20am, extinguished the car and ensured the female driver escaped unharmed.

At this stage, the fire brigade was unsure what exactly caused the fire, but a brigade spokesman took an educated guess.

"She was driving it at the time, so it could have been an electrical fault or something like that," he said.

"Ambulance attended, but she appeared to be OK.

"We don't muck around mate."

Traffic was backed up, while the fire, which started in the engine bay, was extinguished and its damaged shell retrieved by a tow truck.

The flow of traffic on the hill had returned to normal soon after the incident
