BMX bandits to hit South Tweed Skate Bowl
IF you know what a tuck no hander is, St Joseph's Youth Service has just the competition for you.
If not, here's your chance to learn a thing or two while you check out the top skate, BMX and scooter talent from around the Tweed.
The South Tweed, Skate, Scooter and Bike Competition will be held at South Tweed Heads Skate Bowl on April 13.
Five divisions will be on display, featuring Scooter under 18's, Skateboarding under 16's and an open division, among others.
Some groovin' music will set the mood and a barbecue and prize giveaways will round out the day.
BMX enthusiast Mariah Thiele, 15, from Banora Point High School has been actively involved with the sport for two years after an introduction by her brother Ingo Thiele, an accomplished rider who is sponsored by Chozen Riders.
"This is the first time I have competed in any competition. It's good that it is being held here at Tweed, as I ride here every weekend and I will be making sure that I practice daily for the comp," she said.
"My favourite trick is the whip air and I like doing tuck no handers, which is when you hold your arms out and you clamp the frame with your knees. It is so scary in the air sometimes."
Mariah's friend Matthew Hopkins, 15, is also considering competing at the event, in the Scooter category. Matthew has been riding the scooter for about three years and loves nothing better than practicing at the Tweed Skate Ramp.
"I am still thinking about entering this competition…I really like the scooter and doing tricks and combo's," he said.
St Joseph's Youth Service programs facilitator Jason Taylor said the competition would be a fun opportunity for Tweed youth to show off their athletic ability in action sports.
"As a result of previous get togethers the popularity of the skating movement in Tweed skate parks has grown above all expectations," he said.
Event sign-on starts at 11am and the competition commences at midday, with a $5 entry fee for competitors.
