Bobcats claw it back

BOTH local clubs dominated the JH Williams men's hockey grand finals at Barrie Smith Field in Murwillumbah on Saturday.

Burringbar outfit Waratah Bobcats came from behind to edge out Northern Star 2-1 in first division, while earlier in the afternoon, the Andrew Kirby-coached Kingscliff had to pull out all stops to get the bikkies 1-0 against East Lismore in second division.

Both games had the big roll-up of spectators on the edges of their seats because the results were in doubt until the final hooter.

In first division, Northern Star hit the front in the 26th minute when inspirational captain Thomas Vaninjarte scored from a penalty corner but the Bobcats struck back nine minutes later when classy skipper Tim Willis launched a perfectly placed cross from out wide which Peter Irby trapped and then reverse-flicked into the net.

Willis himself broke the dead-lock 10 minutes from full-time when he showed all his class in beating several defenders and the goalkeeper.

Willis described the performance as a “great team effort”.

“Everyone did what was asked, but I was glad that our goalie Mitch Paron was on the top of his game and Peter Irby's contribution went a long way to us winning,” Willis said.

Kirby put Kingscliff's victory down to his team's never-say-die attitude in a game that could have gone either way as neither dominated at any stage of the clash.

However Lady Luck was on Kingscliff's side as they were the only team to trouble the scoreboard operator, finding the back of the net five minutes into the second half.

The ever-reliable Jordan Wilson was the man, beating a couple of players in a wonderful individual run and then crashing home the winner above the 'keeper's head.

“It was a scrappy affair throughout, but we did just enough to win,” Kirby said.

Kirby was satisfied with all of his troops' efforts but singled out Wilson, the workaholic Ben Toovey and goalie Kelvin Jordan for special mention.
