Bolt eyes 'double double'

JAMAICAN sprint superstar Usain Bolt silenced his critics by becoming the first athlete to successfully defend a men's Olympic 100m title since Carl Lewis back in 1988, smashing his own Games record in the process.

And now the 25-year-old is focused on something no one has done, the double double - winning the 100m and 200m sprints at consecutive Olympics.

In the fastest Olympic 100m final ever, Bolt emphatically answered doubts over his fitness and form by running 9.63secs to beat training partner Yohan Blake and American Justin Gatlin.

Only Bolt himself has run faster. His world record of 9.58secs was set in Berlin in 2009.

So quick was the final that seven of the eight-man field went under 10 seconds for the first time in history, with only Asafa Powell, who was injured in the race, failing to better that mark. Both Blake (9.75) and Gatlin (9.79) recorded personal bests.

But Bolt is not finished yet - he insists he must retain his 200m title too in order to be deemed "a legend".

"It really means a lot because a lot of people doubted me and were saying I wasn't going to win ... there was lot of talk," he said.

"For me it was an even greater feeling to come out here and show the world that I'm still the No.1. I'm still the best. That's the first step for me. I have to win my 200m title also and then I'll be considered a legend."

Round one of the 200m starts at 8.50pm (AEST) tonight.

Several Aussies will also be in action in the Olympic stadium. All eyes should be on gold medal favourite Sally Pearson providing she makes the 100m hurdles final at 6am (AEST) tomorrow.

Triple jumper Henry Frayne will leap into his qualifying (7.45pm AEST), Benn Harradine would love to contest the final of the men's discus (4.45am AEST), while Kim Mickle and Kathryn Mitchell will be hoping to keep their Olympic journeys alive by making it through the javelin qualifiers (7pm AEST).

Away from the track and field, the Aussie triathlon line-up of Courtney Atkinson, Brad Kahlefeldt and Brendan Sexton will need to produce something special if they want to beat British superstars, twins Alistair and Jonny Brownlee.

The race starts at 8.30pm (AEST).
