Bonding time as 400 take to beach
A GROUP of people who walked 9km along Gold Coast beaches yesterday showed Father's Day was about much more than just toast in bed, new socks and homemade cards.
The Father's Day Walk attracted a healthy crowd and challenged participants with a walk from Burleigh Heads to Kurrawa Beach.
Organiser Chris Morrissey said the walk gave everyone the chance to get to know each other, share time and bond.
“It was a beautiful day; it was really cruisy. It went fantastic.
“The walk was achieved by everybody who turned up, probably about 400 people,” Mr Morrissey said.
“There were lots of dads and grand-dads.”
One of the fathers who took part in the event was Wes Tolhurst of Reedy Creek. He said the walk gave him the opportunity to have heart-to-heart dialogues with other walkers.
“It has broken down barriers between people. We talked about the value of fathers and father figures,” he said.
“Some guys that came around weren't actually fathers; they might have wanted to be fathers, but medically they have not been able to.”
He said the walk also attracted single mothers who wanted their children to meet positive role models.
“A lot of these kids don't have fathers.”
