Bonus day for the Queen's land
QUEENSLANDERS get a bonus this year with a public holiday of the Queen's Birthday Diamond Jubilee this weekend instead of the traditional Queen's Birthday.
The Queen's Birthday public holiday was changed to the first Monday in October.
Former Premier Anna Bligh said that change was to give Queenslander's another "summer" holiday and was proposed in September last year.
"Holidays observe important public occasions like Anzac Day and Australia Day but they also give workers and families a chance to rest and have fun together. "They let us all balance our work and family life better," the former premier said at the time.
"Our lives are becoming busier and busier and that's why I feel it is important that we get the maximum benefit from the public holidays that we do have.
"But we need to consider what best suits families, the community and businesses, as well as what happens in other states."
NSW's Queen's Birthday public holiday is on this weekend.
Queen Elizabeth II (Elizabeth Alexandra Mary) was actually born on April 21 1926.
According to a royal website, the celebration was in June because it offered the best weather (summer) in the United Kingdom for the official parade.
