Collapsed road forces Bonville drivers to take long way home

BONVILLE residents unable to use Pine Creek Way have a long wait ahead for the collapsed section of road to be fixed.

When the Pacific Hwy was upgraded nearby, work was commissioned by Roads and Maritime Services to repair the road before it was handed over to Coffs Harbour City Council.

But just a few years later the road started to crack severely, leading to the current situation where it looks like a localised earthquake has hit the area.

Because the work was done under guarantee, the council has handed responsibility back to the State Government - who themselves have blamed wet conditions for the damage.

But one local resident, who worked on the road with contractors Abigroup said the rain was to be expected and should have been taken into account during the design phase.

Gary Stevenson lives on the road itself and said a single 12 inch pipe accounted for drainage at the damaged section of road.

"That was never going to be enough," Mr Stevenson said.

He said the road was still being used by some, despite barriers closing the road and said the effective dead end was becoming "dodgy" with burnt cars and offensive behaviour at the site.

The road was closed abruptly with little warning and no indication of when work would be undertaken.

An RMS spokesperson said the department had closed the road for "stabilisation work" which it was hoped would be done by the end of the year.

"Emergency stabilisation work is being carried out by Roads and Maritime Services," the spokesperson said.

"The road is expected to reopen in October, weather permitting."
