Boost for hospital outpatients

TWEED Hospital's new outpatients department was officially opened yesterday by parliamentary secretary for regional health, the Hon Melinda Pavey MLC.

With Tweed MP Geoff Provest waiting in the wings, Ms Pavey commended his efforts in lobbying for the facility.

She also shone the limelight on the hospital's hard-working auxiliary and Twin Towns Services Club who raised much-needed funds to provide the service that houses a range of specialists in medical, surgical, antenatal, anaesthetic and nursing clinics.

“Patients must be at the centre of all our endeav- ours,” Ms Pavey said.

“The outpatients department is a huge boost to the region.

“The Tweed population is growing fast with an increasing aging population and we need to keep up with their needs.

“We want to serve and treat people as near as possible to where they live.”

The department also provides specialist outpatient clinics for gynaecology, dental and early pregnancy.

“It's clear a considerable number of patients will benefit from the new outpatients department as a very busy shop front for the hospital,” Ms Pavey said.

The department has nine consultation/treatment rooms, a plaster room and a patient waiting area.
