Bowling for good cause
A RETRO barefoot bowls day in Surfers Paradise will raise funds for the Leukaemia Foundation this weekend.
Gold Coast resident Krista Grono is a Quest ambassador for the Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland and fundraises for the cause.
“I manage a cafe located poolside of the Marrakesh Resort and the gardener who maintains the grounds has a daughter battling the illness,” Ms Grono said.
“That was probably the main reason for me choosing the foundation.”
Ms Grono said a barefoot bowls day was always a popular and enjoyable activity on the Gold Coast.
“I themed the event to make it a bit of fun because everyone loves to dress up,” she said.
Ms Grono said she joined the Quest Ambassador program last year to organise and host fundraising events.
“Last year I hosted events for various charities that I chose and the Leukaemia Foundation was one of them,” she said.
“I was then approached by the manager of the Gold Coast Branch Gillian Rumpf to join the Quest Ambassador program which runs from October 2009 to end of June 2010.
“So far (in the program) I have hosted a barbecue trivia night, Christmas goodies home baking, and Christmas carols hosted by the Paradise Resort Surfers Paradise.”
She said several venues were approached to host the bowls day and the Gold Coast Commerce Club agreed to help. “The support that they have shown towards the day has been fantastic so big thank you to them,” Ms Grono said.
“We are hoping to have about 200 or more people attend and the aim is to raise $4000 to $5000,” she said. “With the support of the local businesses donating supplies towards the day, the entire ticket cost will be donated to the foundation.”
The barefoot bowls day will be held this Sunday at the Surfers Paradise Bowls Club. Activities from noon will include bowling, music and a sausage sizzle.
