Bowling for titles dynasty
THE 29th Australian Indoor Championship will be held next week and defending champion Jeremy "King” Henry is going for back to back wins and title number three.
Henry, who won the prestigious Golden Nugget Singles last week, is up against well-performed former West Australian bowler Trystan Smallacombe now bowling out of Darwin in the first round at 8am on Monday morning. This may be his toughest match of the tournament.
Defending ladies champion Carla Krizanic plays New Zealand Champion Val Smith in the first round in a tough draw, also at 8am on Monday.
If Krizanic can win the title again she will join Murphy as the only multiple winner over a span of 15 years.
NSW qualifier Karen Murphy, six times champion and only multiple ladies champion in the 14 years of the ladies event has been staged, has a forfeit in round one and will begin her campaign for a seventh title at 10am on Tuesday.
Local Queensland bowlers vying for this prestigious title include Clinton Bailey, John Balzarolo (who play each other in round one), Luke Day and Alan Law.
Queensland qualifying ladies have a tough draw with Melissa Larcombe up against wildcard Kelsey Cottrell in her first match, Lynsey Clarke and Emma Brown play each other, along with Chloe Stewart and Kristy Thatcher, who all have a good chance of making the final.
Only 15 men have won the Australian Indoor Title in 28 years, with five multiple winners in Ian Schuback (1995/96), Rex Johnston (1990, 2000), Steve Glasson (1994, 97, 99, 01, 02, 03, 04, 05). Kelvin Kerkow (2006/7) and Jeremy Henry (2011, 2015).
2016 Australian Open winner Aron Sherriff is seeded second and has a good chance to make the final but needs to win against Nathan Dawson and then a possible match-up against Ian Taylor in a quarter final clash.
"King” Henry has the chance this week to bring his total of wins to three and 1993 winner Ian "Tails” has the change to claim a second indoor title, albeit 23 years apart.
Only one bowler has taken out the Golden Nugget Singles and the Australian Indoor over the two weeks in August in the same year and that was Brett Wilkie in 2010.
Play starts on Monday at 8am with matches every two hours for a near full field of 31 men and 31 ladies. Play continues till the semi-finals on Wednesday and men's and ladies finals on Thursday starting at 9am, 11am and 2pm.
All final matches will be streamed live over the internet with links from www.lawnbowlsnews.com.
The finals of the blue ribbon Gold Coast Tweed District Champion of Champion Singles was held at Musgrave Hill last Sunday.
Semi-final results: Max Jaffray (Tweed Heads) defeated Caine Burns (Southport) 25/8 and Jade Groenewege ( McKenzie Park) defeated Mark Casey (Helensvale) 25/22.
The final was a close tussle all the way with scores locked in at 15/15 but Groenewege finished stronger and went on to win against Jaffray 25/16.
