Sports club shows artistic flair
South Tweed Sports Club members and avid bowlers Barry Henderson and Jack Willey have joined local artists Heather Bell and Liesa O'Brien for an exhibition of their paintings at the sports club's Horizons Art Gallery.
Banora Point resident Barry Henderson said the show was part of a community initiative which aimed to encourage local artists and provide them the opportunity to display and sell their works.
Mr Henderson is an award winning painter who won a Tweed Naturally Art Prize two years ago and has exhibited at the Sunshine Coast Art Festival.
"Every six weeks there's a change over and different artists get to show their art," he said.
Cobaki's Jack Willey, who is 95 years old, said he was unaccustomed to exhibiting and saw himself as a hobbyist.
"I paint simply to amuse myself and am pleased as punch to be part of the exhibition," Mr Willey said.
"I started some 20 years ago and always paint in oils."
"I mostly paint country landscapes but also like abstracts," Mr Willey added.
Kingscliff resident Liesa O'Brien paints her 'surfscapes' and portraits with acrylics, while Banora Point art teacher Heather Bell exhibits traditional landscapes in water colour and acrylic and has shown her art at several galleries.
"Some of my students have exhibited at Horizons Gallery and have been very successful."
"As a tutor it's nice to put your money where your mouth is," Ms Bell said.
Ms Bell shares her experience and skills with hobby artists during regular classes at the Kirra Community and Art Centre.
Horizons Art Gallery is open Monday to Friday from 9.30am until 11.30pm and Saturday and Sunday from 10am until 11.30pm.
The exhibition is free of charge and will continue until 5 August.
