Brigade HQ 'fails safety codes'
EXTENSIONS to a Gold Coast fire brigade's headquarters have failed the council's fire safety codes, according to a state MP.
Gaven MP Alex Douglas said the State Government was ignoring vegetation clearance zones at the Gold Coast Rural Fire Brigade headquarters on 32 Mudgeeraba Rd, Mudgeeraba.
"While most householders have commenced their preparations for fire season, the State Government is thumbing its nose at the rules which are meant to ensure the safety of everyone," Dr Douglas said.
"For the State Government to build with disregard to their own fire regulations makes a mockery of the emergency services motto - prepare, act and survive."
Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts said Dr Douglas was aware the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service engaged a private certifier to undertake an assessment.
"He knows this because he asked a Question on Notice in Parliament on this issue in August, and the response he received in September clearly stated that 'The Gold Coast Rural Fire Brigade Group has engaged a private certifier to undertake an assessment of the property and plans'.
"To raise this issue again is an attempt by Dr Douglas to deliberately mislead his constituents and the wider Gold Coast community and to undermine public confidence in the QFRS."
Mr Roberts said the QFRS has received approval from the Gold Coast City Council.
