Bringing books to life for book week

THERE was plenty of colourful characters to be seen at the the St Joseph's Primary School book week parade in Murwillumbah on Wednesday.

The annual parade is a celebration of literacy in schools across the country.

St Joseph's library manager Melissa Fraser said book week is a chance to highlight the importance of reading, especially at the primary school level.

"It just shows everybody in our school how important books are to us,” Ms Fraser said.

"The parents are so supportive of our book fair and book week's events.

It's important for the kids to see parents value reading, then hopefully they'll start to value reading.

We're lucky to have such wonderful support from our family and friends they put a lot of value into reading and reading literacy in our school. ”

Ms Fraser said the kids have enjoyed a number of different activities to celebrate book week.

"We've been to the Byron Bay writer's festival to meet Damon Young and Peter Carnavas and the children cameback extremely motivated,” she said.

"The children learnt about how the authors got their ideas but also how the illustrators drew their pictures.

They came back very keen to draw their own pictures.”

Ms Fraser said each class chose their own costume theme for the parade.
