Councillor worried about council's budget going into red
VETERAN Tweed councillor Warren Polglase remains concerned about the council's budgetary position, claiming the administration next financial year will rack up its second deficit in a row.
Cr Polglase said minus the accounting tricks, the budget was scheduled to run a small deficit of about $20,000-$30,000 for the next few years.
"Once you go into deficit you never get out of it," he said.
"In my 24 years in Tweed Shire Council we've run balanced budgets for a long time.
"Council has got to start showing restraint."
Last year councillors rejected Cr Polglase's proposal to cut spending by 0.3% across all operations to save $500,000 on its $194 million budget.
He unsuccessfully argued the council needed to investigate how to generate surplus funds given rate pegging was likely to continue and federal and state government grants were likely to dry up.
