Burringbar residents embrace NBN tower for better net

THE National Broadband Network is continuing to be rolled out across the Tweed Shire.

Construction is currently underway in Chillingham village and the network is available in Pottsville Seabreeze, Casuarina centre and Casuarina west.

Burringbar is next in the roll out.

A community meeting was held on Thursday at Burringbar Sports Club to discuss questions about the network.

Last year it was reported some Burringbar residents opposed the network sighting health fears and a concerns towers could be intrusive.

Residents were told NBN's fixed wireless facilities operate at very low levels of radio frequency electromagnetic energy (EME).

The Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) has confirmed there are no established health effects from these very low-powered radio signals.

An NBN spokesperson said feedback from the community was positive.

"Residents were pleased NBN would become available in Burringbar because the town is a wireless internet black spot," the spokesperson said.

Under Tony Abbott's government the fixed wireless service will not be established in Murwillumbah - Julia Gillard's previous government pledge.

The network will use cellular technology to transmit radio signals to and from a small antenna fixed on the outside of a home or business, which is pointed directly towards the fixed wireless facility.
