Cabarita assailants "ridiculous”: police slam arrested duo
TWO MEN are set to face Byron Local Court today following their dramatic arrest at gunpoint at Cabarita on Thursday.
Police will allege the Queensland men, aged 22 and 26, were wanted by authorities when they crossed the border into NSW at about 3.10pm.
Tweed Byron police crime manager Brendon Cullen said police will allege the pair were in a stolen vehicle.
"For safety reasons we terminated the pursuit on the M1 near the Clothiers Creek Rd turn off when the vehicle was doing excessive speeds and we left it to Qld POL AIR to monitor that car,” Detective Inspector Cullen said.
The stolen vehicle continued to BP Hastings Point to fill up with petrol before travelling back to Cabarita.
"NSW police weren't pursuing the vehicle at that time, it was under supervision of POL AIR,” Det Insp Cullen said.
"The offenders drove through a stop sign at the intersection of Banksia Ave and Hastings Point Rd without stopping which caused their car to collide with another car.
"We were able to arrest them because they collided.”
Det Insp Cullen said police were concerned for the Cabarita community at the time of the arrest.
"These people just have no consideration of the safety of anyone else in the community and at that time of day there's a lot of children about, so we were extremely concerned,” Det Insp Cullen said.
"It was ridiculous the fact they went through a stop sign, it shows they don't give a damn about anyone else.”
The passenger of the stolen vehicle was charged with being carried in a conveyance (car) without consent of the owner, custody of a knife, possessions of a prohibited weapon (sling shot) and possession of prohibited drugs (cannabis and methylamphetamine).
The driver of the stolen vehicle was charged under Sky's Law (police pursuit), driving in a dangerous manner, receiving property stolen outside of NSW (the vehicle), unlicenced driving and use of illegal number plates.
Det Insp Cullen said both men were refused bail.
"It was a very good job by the police in that there was no person injured and in that these two people were arrested and there was good assistance from our Queensland counterparts,” Det Insp Cullen said.
