He beat Barbadian Trevor Farley and Jamaica's Christopher Marsh in straight games.
INITIAL REPORT: Tuesday July 29, 9:00am:
CABARITA table tennis star Kane Townsend's Glasgow Commonwealth Games campaign continues today with the start of his singles matches.
In his first team game last week, Kane won the singles and doubles against St Lucia.
But alas, the Australian men's team crashed out of the competition on Monday (local time) losing the quarterfinal 3-2 against Nigeria.
In the singles, Kane will be up against Barbados and one other yet-to-be-named country. He's the number one seed in his group so will be favourite to win.
"I think he'll win his group and go through to knockout and then it's a bit of luck based on who he draws next," said proud mum Kathy Townsend, who is also Queensland coach and director.
The excitement of the Games reportedly hasn't flustered Kane, who is known for his steady nerve, on and off the court.
"He takes things as they come and is used to major events," Kathy said.
The 21-year-old trains at the Cabarita Beach Table Tennis Club and will be home next month to represent the club at the Queensland Club Team titles.
He was selected for Glasgow by finishing third at the Games trials, held at the Gold Coast earlier this year.
Table tennis is a family affair for the Townsends - brother Wade, 24, is on the Australian High Performance Team with Kane and Dad Graeme, like Mum, is a level two accredited coach.
