Cabinet reshuffle possible after summer break

CABINET ministers will compete for a promotion over parliament's summer recess, after Prime Minister Tony Abbott indicated a possible reshuffle.

Mr Abbott on Thursday night told ABC TV a reshuffle of ministerial portfolios could happen during the Christmas break.

The confirmation of changes follows an investigation begun into leaking of documents from Defence Minister David Johnston's office, and increasing tensions within Cabinet.

Immigration Minister Scott Morrison could be among the contenders for promotion, despite Mr Morrison saying on Friday his focus was on the job at hand.

Other high performers during the year included Finance Minister Mathias Cormann, who led the privatisation of Medibank Private, and possibly Trade Minister Andrew Robb, after securing trade agreements with China, Japan and Korea this year.
