Call for Cudgera Creek upgrade

IT'S unlikely Hastings Point's Cudgera Creek foreshore has ever been upgraded, according to general store owner John Sillars.

Both locals and tourists enjoy the area's natural, low-key beauty but may benefit from a development application by the council to upgrade the park facilities.

Mr Sillars said more shelters, barbecues, a footpath, zebra crossing and wind-break trees would be welcome additions.

"It's hard to say if it would draw more people to the area," he said.

"Maybe it would help return people though.

"Let's hope whatever they do build doesn't impact in any visual way on Hastings Point."

The DA is open for public comment until Friday, December 30.

It specifies anyone may make a submission in writing to the council until then, and "where a submission is in the form of an objection, then the grounds of objection are required to be specified".

Mr Sillars said it should be kept "low-key".

"Everything in Hastings Point is low-key, but I guess that depends on how you define low-key.

"I guess what I mean is as long as it doesn't impact on the natural beauty of the foreshore."

He said although many aspects of Hastings required the council's attention he hoped the headland area would be left alone.

"More public bins on the headland would be good, and in the upgraded park, also, would be lovely."

He has owned the general store for 16 months and said running a take-away, post office and liquor store while working 88 hours per week was a challenge - "an enjoyable challenge".

"It does well as a community service," Mr Sillars said.
