Call for roll bars on quads

MURWILLUMBAH dairy farmer Cory Crosthwaite has had a couple of spills from his four-wheel farm bike that were more embarrassing than life-threatening.

But the fourth generation dairy farmer, whose family has been running a riverfront Byangum property for 90 years, has backed moves by Australian workplace safety authorities, including WorkCover, to push towards making roll bars on quad bikes compulsory.

He was not so keen, however, on the suggestion rural workers be forced to wear helmets when riding all terrain vehicles.

“Once I went to block a cow. But the cow kept coming and she knocked the quad bike over,” he said.

“Roll bars should be on them all.

“It's not impractical to put roll bars on. It would probably save a life, but you don't think about that until after you're dead.”

Unlike helmets he said roll bars would simply be there and not “something you have to put on all the time”.

“Helmets are hot in the summer and you don't get that much good vision especially if you are chasing a cow.”
